Our Half Day Holiday

That’s what it sounds like when hail hits the side of a trailer house. It was right after we got in for the night that we heard the soft pitter patter of rain on the roof. Jim had me check the radar not more than 20 minutes earlier. There was NOTHING! So where did that come from?  We couldn’t even hear each other talk.
What this did was allow us to sleep in this a.m. And I had the morning to get caught up on laundry and take care  of some work I had been putting off on the computer. I have to take my computer to the Pizza Hut (which is basically in our front yard) and sit outside of the building to pick up signal. While I was sitting there,  a couple of employees came to work. Apparently they’re not used to seeing someone sitting on the bench at their back door with a computer. They both were a little concerned why I was there. 🙂
Jim was going to go to the combine to fuel and service and see what condition the field was  in. Great! I might actually get a little time to myself. It was awesome while it lasted but he was back way too soon. He thought we should walk to our neighbors for lunch and then head out to the field.  Our “neighbors” is a nice small town cafe called “Ed’s Cafe” and it’s right in our front yard (along with Pizza Hut)…too bad they haven’t been open when we come in from the field late at night! If you’re ever in Shattuck at meal time and you want good  home-cooked food at a reasonable price, head for Ed’s (right along Highway 283). They even make homemade french fries and give you way more than you need!
At the last minute, Jim decided I could probably have a little more time. So I finished what I was doing, put the last load of clothes in the dryer, packed our lunch boxes with snacks, filled our water jugs for the afternoon, jumped in Frank and headed to the field. Sometimes I wish I were the boss and didn’t have to think about all those little details 😉
The wheat was dry and was yielding pretty darn good in places!
One good detail I should share is the wind QUIT blowing today. It’s either blowing with a vengeance or not at all. At least it wasn’t unbearably hot. Taylor and Callie will be here tomorrow night. Woo hoo!!! My helpers will be here soon!
