The Final Wheat Harvest

We finished the acres we came to Limon for yesterday afternoon. This was the final harvest for our farmers (retiring) and for us. Our first year cutting for Steve and Larry was 2007. I have enjoyed this stop for several reasons:

  • Close to the Colorado mountains
  • Flat fields in mile long strips
  • We stay at a KOA – with a pool
  • We have cable AND internet

But the number one reason I enjoyed coming was the people we cut for. They have treated us like family. It was definitely a sentimental day  – especially cutting the final acre of wheat.

The yield turned out much better than was expected. This seems to be the story for the summer. We thought we would cut a 20 bushel crop. I’m not exactly sure what the final average will be but I’m going to guess a 30-35 bushel crop. The test weight stayed consistently at 61.5 pounds. The protein was 8-10%. I’m glad the final harvest was an above average one! With this being the final harvest, it means a change for us, too. Next year,we’ll have to find acres to replace the ones we are losing. Sometimes finding replacement acres is stressful because of the unknown. This is when you really have to fall back on faith – and friends. Thank you, Steve and Larry, for giving us the opportunity to be a part of your harvest the past six years!

After we finished, we took the trucks back to the farmyard. We arrived just in time to watch the new owner load the head and drive the Massey to its new home.
