everything’s better when they’re here

The time has come…already.

The girls will be heading home in the morning. They’ve been with us exactly one month today. It feels like we haven’t even had enough time together to say they were here.  Summer just started – didn’t it?

Callie and I went for a walk around Jordan last night and talked about how fast their time on the road with us went. I told her before she knows it, she’ll be back in the world of routines and clocks. Something harvest lacks. A clock is necessary because the rest of the world revolves around one. Routine? Well, that just doesn’t seem to be something we can even get started around here. We nearly get a routine started and then it either rains or it’s time to move on.

Once she gets back “home, home”, though, it won’t take long to fall back into that “non harvest” world and it will feel comfortable again.

How am I feeling tonight? Thanks for asking! I’m feeling a tad bit sad. Sad because I don’t want them to leave. Everything’s better when they’re here. I’m also sad because it’s a reminder of what it will be like in a couple more years. The day I’ve dreaded is edging closer and closer each year. No, wait, every day.

We have neighbors as of last night. They have three little kiddos. I think back to when I had little kids running around my trailer house. How could it be so long ago already? Do you think the mama of those little tikes would believe me if I told her to enjoy all the frustration today because tomorrow it will be over and she’ll miss it? It just goes too fast.

We finished our first job on Sunday afternoon and moved to the next location right away. Then it rained. Not much. The clouds and humidity hung in the air most of the day. Jim sampled late in the afternoon but it was still over 14%. Then, it rained again today – all day. If the sun shines tomorrow, maybe we’ll be able to get back in the field on Thursday. Maybe.

Moving to the next job location.

We’re not in Kansas anymore!

This magnificent cloud was over the town of Circle. Little did I know only an hour later we would be shut down. Once the rain started, we decided to take the girls to the Hell Creek Bar for chicken and boy was it good!

The bar in the Hell Creek.

It’ll take some getting used to – having the girls at home again. But, it will give me all the more reason to look forward to our return “home, home”, as well.
