I was right – it has been a LONG day!
We were able to get packed up and on the road heading west in fairly decent time (for us). I believe we were pulling through the metropolis of Jordan at 9:30 a.m. (Mountain Time). We arrived in Lewistown right at noon.
Our new home is in the only trailer park in town. Unfortunately, they were unable to get us a 50 amp spot in the “vacation” area. Therefore, we took the only spot that would accommodate our needs for the length of time required (which was more than a few days). The spot landed us between two stationary trailers. No view of the mountains and probably no pine tree smell. Oh well, that’s the way it goes.
After we got the cottage backed into its new home and set up again, we headed for Main Street to grab something to eat. Then we got the phone call. Ed, the farmer, was cutting wheat. After we left yesterday, he and his son decided they’d cut a test sample and realized it was dry enough to keep going. So, we quickly ate our lunch, gathered what we thought we’d need for the rest of the day and made our first (of many) 40 mile trip to the farm. Taylor and Callie followed with the dually and “Nasty”.
I’m the designated truck driver here for our crew. We’ll be hauling to the grain bins again. I know when we were here last year, I was able to haul a few loads to Denton but the majority was put in bin storage. The only thing that’s sort of crummy about the job of hauling wheat is the heat and dirt. I’m not sure what the difference is but the 90 degree heat here feels just as hot as 105 in Kansas! Maybe it was just the lack of a breeze today. This evening, a storm brewed up. No rain was produced but the break from the intense sun was a blessing!
Jim was able to cut 40 acres. He said what we cut this evening should average 50+ bushels per acre. Any other wheat particulars…I have no clue.
We were back at the cottage tonight at 10:45. Gosh, I really wish we would have been able to set up camp in Denton again this year. Oh well, that’s the way it goes!
