We made it to Lusk, WY early this evening. The trip from Jordan to Limon and back to Lusk was uneventful even though we had Friday the 13th to think about. The heat was cranked on high but since I wasn’t pulling anything, I had the luxury of air conditioning.
Wednesday night (after leaving Jordan) we made it as far as the parking lot of Walmart in Scottsbluff.
We ate at Domino’s. I’m sure they weren’t happy with us walking in five minutes before they closed (11:00)! I was happy, though, when I saw how they are promoting our American Dairy Farmers!
It was 3:00 when we pulled into the “home place” and began the process of loading the combine. Steve stopped by to keep us company and tell us goodbye. Jim asked Steve if he’d let him know when the farm sale would be because there was something he’d like to buy. “What’s that?”, Steve asked. “Well, I’d like to buy your dad’s grain probe…unless it’s something you won’t sell because of the sentimental value”, says Jim. “It’s yours”, said Steve. This literally brought tears to Jim’s eyes. We’ll treasure it forever…thank you, Steve and Larry!
We parked the yellow beast in my favorite Nebraska town – Harrison. I’ve always thought this sweet little town would be a place I could move to; it has everything! We drove the pickup to Lusk to meet up again with the girls and the Graham’s. It was 5:00.
The phone rings. It’s Taylor. The Graham pickup just met us on the road but was filled to capacity with people heading to the “Natural Bridge” to go fishing. Do you want go? If you do, you’ll have to drive the pickup-this one’s full. Sure, we’ll go. What’s another 3 hours (round trip). Back on the road headed west for Douglas, WY.
We reached our destination at 7:45 p.m. (stopped for pizza in Douglas). The sign said the gate closes at 8:00 p.m. John reassured us it wouldn’t close and we’d be able to fish. We had just thrown our lines in the water when the caretaker walks up to us and tells us we have to leave…the gate closes at 8:00 p.m. BUT, he continues, you can drive outside the gate and walk in. This is what we did and we fished until dark and didn’t get a bite. HOWEVER, it will be a great memory!
