Jenna and the CLAAS Beast(s)

Jamie told me a couple of days ago she had lined up a personal tour of the CLAAS of Omaha plant with Jenna.

Jenna started working for CLAAS quite some time ago. I grew up respecting someone’s place of employment which meant don’t visit unless there’s a need and don’t call unless there’s an emergency. So, when Jamie told me she was going to visit Jenna at work, I thought…”well, heck, if she’s going maybe I’ll tag along too”. If Jamie hadn’t gone, I may have felt like I couldn’t visit until another group of custom harvesters made their way to the plant.

As Promised…Cheesy Potato Soup (and more)

Before I get to the recipe, I wanted to share a couple of items I found the other day while looking for something else. Surely you’ve never done that! The other day, I said something to Callie referring to the tigers which turned to butter in the story, “Little Black Sambo”. That was one I remember my Grandma reading to me and it was a favorite of mine. Callie had no clue what I was talking about and I wanted her to read it. Well, for some reason, it wasn’t in the place I always thought I remembered it being in. Instead, I found these great reminders of days gone by:

This is an old postcard Grandma sent from Regina, Saskatchewan in 1972. Her friend, in turn, returned it to Grandma and then Grandma gave it to me (knowing my love for the harvest). This is what is written on the back in Grandma’s handwriting, “We’ve had a very good year. This is like our 3 machines and we pick wheat up like it shows here in the North Country. Only we have cabs. I LOVE it up here. Pauline”

An Endangered Species?

For some “down” time, I sometimes like to hit the “Random Post” link on my blog. It’s always fun to see what we were doing on that particular random day.  If someone is with me, I like to reread the posting to them to spark a memory of where we were and what we were doing. Sort of like playing a game. This particular posting is one I feel could be thought of on a daily basis and wanted to share the game with you, my readers:

I’ve been trying to keep up with the U.S. Farmers & Ranchers Alliance Facebook page www.facebook.com/USFarmersandRanchers. However, every time I visit to see what’s being talked about, I just get mad!

The World That Most People Are In

It’s been three weeks ago that I spent the entire day sitting in the trailer house wondering what to do next. That was the first day of being thrown back into the non-harvest world and I had no idea where to start. Harvest feels like a dream ago. Did we really experience the summer wheat harvest?

In the past three weeks, I’ve emptied the cottage on wheels and have become part of the world that most people are in. There are harvesters still on the road doing what they started nearly five months ago. I miss that world. While driving around our rural area, I see the combines in the field and get homesick. Homesick for the lifestyle that we were still a part of just a month ago.

I keep ignoring the fact that the trailer house is still in dire need of being cleaned. Every day I think, “this will be the day I will begin that chore”. So far, every day goes by and I have yet to make that initial cleaning wipe! If I had all the money in the world, I would hire someone to come in and do it for me while I’m involved in the world that most people are in.

HHD and The Dirt Blizzard

The flags can attest to the strong winds as we entered. As it was, this was calm compared to what we endured later in the day.

The plan on Friday was for Jim and The Yellow Beast to get back to picking corn AFTER the trip to Husker Harvest Days on Wednesday. That plan was spoiled by the hot temps that made their way back into the region. It was 96 degrees on Tuesday. I tried to justify to him why it would be ok for his taking Wednesday off to make the  trip to Grand Island. “It’s still so early in the fall”. “What? Is it going to start raining now?” “It’s not like the weather’s going to drastically change”. However, because of his strong work ethic all my attempts were met with a strong NO!  I wanted to go. Mark, Candi and Jenna were still planning on the trip, so I decided what the heck?! (One more day to pretend like I have nothing better to do.)

WHERE’S THE GRASS?

I’m sure they’re eating something but it’s not GREEN grass.

We’re home, home! The final miles were driven yesterday. It’s been quite a long 5 days!  And so very HOT – 110 degrees on Wednesday and 105 yesterday. The Pete kept running hot all day on Wednesday – to the point it shut itself off going up a hill. That has never happened before. I asked Jim why it had decided to do it at that particular time and he said it was because of the intense heat and the four mile hills we were climbing. This heat and no rain is really taking a toll on our country. The Midwest is very, very sick right now!

It Feels Like Home

She wasn’t “home” when we left the driveway. “Home” was in Texas with another family. I sold the trailer house that had been home to us during the summer months last fall. What we left “home, home” with in May was an RV full of our belongings.

Wordless Wednesday: The Z Crew

Zeorian Harvesting & Trucking 2012 (missing Curt & Jamie – DANG!)

It Just Feels Good!

We got back in the field late Tuesday morning. I was definitely in some sort of funk all day due to missing the girls and the mountains. By the end of the day, though, things sort of started falling back into place.

Until you begin the next good book

The very first thing I need to do is tell my Dad Happy Birthday! I love you and hope you did something special for yourself today. I remember one birthday, in particular, we celebrated in Great Falls. I believe that was in 1983. I remember we sat there for what seemed like forever before we finally got just a few more acres to cut before having to head home. I know Pohney used to make you a special German chocolate cake and I can remember Tom “Thumb” always making a point to tell me to tell you Happy Birthday. Good memories!

Gathering the equipment to begin the chore of cleaning and getting ready to move…again.
