WHERE’S THE GRASS?

I’m sure they’re eating something but it’s not GREEN grass. 

We’re home, home! The final miles were driven yesterday. It’s been quite a long 5 days!  And so very HOT – 110 degrees on Wednesday and 105 yesterday. The Pete kept running hot all day on Wednesday – to the point it shut itself off going up a hill. That has never happened before. I asked Jim why it had decided to do it at that particular time and he said it was because of the intense heat and the four mile hills we were climbing. This heat and no rain is really taking a toll on our country. The Midwest is very, very sick right now!

Wordless Wednesday: The Z Crew

THE FINAL DAY

Zeorian Harvesting finished the last acre of the 2012 wheat harvest last night. After a high-five and a “good job”, Jim and I looked at each other and smiled. Another year complete!

The past 110 days have revolved completely around wheat and being on the road. Today, the harvest letdown will creep in and continue to eat at me until everything is back home and real life begins again. It’ll be SO GOOD to be reunited with the kids but I’m not looking forward to being home. Home, right now, means routine, schedule, alarm clocks and the work of getting back to normal. The work of stepping back into the real world will involve chasing spiders and bugs from our house, unloading the cottage, deep cleaning the cottage (inside & out), and pulling a horrible amount of weeds. Ugh! Plus being thrown right back into the needs of school, church and any outside pulls.

It Just Feels Good!

We got back in the field late Tuesday morning. I was definitely in some sort of funk all day due to missing the girls and the mountains. By the end of the day, though, things sort of started falling back into place.

Until you begin the next good book

The very first thing I need to do is tell my Dad Happy Birthday! I love you and hope you did something special for yourself today. I remember one birthday, in particular, we celebrated in Great Falls. I believe that was in 1983. I remember we sat there for what seemed like forever before we finally got just a few more acres to cut before having to head home. I know Pohney used to make you a special German chocolate cake and I can remember Tom “Thumb” always making a point to tell me to tell you Happy Birthday. Good memories!

Making the Best of a Crummy Situation

I left off one place on my list of “Where We’ve Been on the Fourth of July” – Hobbs, NM. How in the world could I have forgotten that place? Maybe because it’s a memory I choose to block? 🙂

Jenna and Taylor made it back just about 4:00 on the afternoon of the Fourth. It was so good to see them!! When Jenna walked into the cottage, she said it felt weird not walking into our “old” trailer. The other thing she said she expected to see when she drove up was Jordan – our dog. Guess those two pieces of harvest have remained in her brain. This is the second summer Jenna hasn’t been with us. Jamie hasn’t been with us since 2004.

I had most of the food preparations completed when they got here so I didn’t have to feel like I had to cook when they walked in. The only question left was, “Are you going to make your Rice Krispie flag, Jen?” She smiled and said, “Of course! And I’ve even brought my own supplies” – which she did. Every detail was covered even down to a pan.

 

 

 

So we had our traditional meal ready to go: grilled hamburgers, hotdogs, pasta salad, beans, chips, cherry pie and Jenna’s Krispie flag.

Leon and Jada Bulgin had finished cutting their wheat and decided since they’d worked so hard, they were going to take a few days off while they were in Colorado. Their crew headed to Denver the afternoon of the 4th and they decided they’d rather stay in Limon. So, we gathered our food and added it to theirs and had quite the smorgasbord! The only thing missing were the fireworks. ABSOLUTELY NO fireworks were allowed in this state. I’m sure there were displays in Denver and the surrounding communities but none in Limon. It was the quietest holiday celebration ever. If Jordan were still alive, she would have loved it.

Jada had bought some party poppers and I bought some light sticks with an American flag on the end. So, we did have something fun to make it feel like a party. Happy 236th Birthday, America!

Yesterday, the girls and I went to Flagler for a couple of hours. They have a couple of fun antique/thrift stores to browse through. Jenna found an old Flamingo brand ice cooler for $5. Taylor found a couple of DVD’s she thought we should add to our collection.

It was a fairly uneventful day which was made complete with a supper engagement with one of our farmers, Steve, and his wife, Kathy. We had a wonderful evening! They have become great friends and I will really miss working with/for them. Things change but I feel confident these people will remain in our lives – somehow.

The next couple of days, we’re going to become tourists. We’re going to pack our tent and necessities and head for the mountains for a couple of days. Jenna will have to head home on Sunday and then we’ll have to start making the trek northward. And…the weather forecast is calling for rain in the mountains. Oh well. Ya gotta make the best of it!

Cutting Wheat in the Desert

We were back in the field today before 10:00 a.m. I know we could have been there earlier but we had to get the equipment serviced and moved to the first field which takes time. The  fields we cut here are in mile long strips. I like cutting these because there’s very little turning and it feels like you get a lot accomplished in a short period of time. Each field is approximately 100 acres  – we were able to get two of them cut today. Unfortunately, the yields aren’t as good as we’ve been cutting this summer. Jim thought we’d be lucky if we cut 20 bushel wheat here.
