scenes from j & t’s excellent adventure-parts 3 & 4 (cont.)

I’m not sure where this is going to lead but my intentions are to share with you some of the scenes of our travels from Montana to Nebraska, back to Montana and then, finally, back to Nebraska again.

We’ve been “home, home” for two weeks. ONLY two weeks. Harvest feels like a dream. Callie and I made a trip to Omaha on Saturday in search of the perfect Homecoming dress. We met Jenna very briefly at the mall and had lunch with her but basically the day was just a me-and-Cal-day. This doesn’t happen very often.  Anyways, she and I had some fairly deep discussions that day; one being about harvest. She and I agreed that unless you’re involved with harvest, you just can’t explain the feelings this industry creates deep down in your soul. We discussed how sad we were that there are people out there who haven’t any idea what a wonderful place Jordan, Montana is because it’s not within their 10 mile radius. Did we find the perfect dress? We found “plan B” dress. “Plan A” dress is on it’s way in the mail. Continue reading

This is Nebraska Football (video)

“This is Nebraska football!  A tradition filled with passion…loyalty…excellence…accountability…most importantly – family. It’s game day at Nebraska!”

Another field trip. This time with preschoolers. And where do we go? Memorial Stadium in Lincoln – home of the Nebraska Cornhuskers. Another good day to be a bus driver!

Nebraska Wheatie visits Prairieland Dairy

IMG_3126[1]I’ve never been to a dairy before. I mean…a REAL dairy. I’ve been to farms in the past that have included milking cows on their list of chores. Farms used to be more diversified than they are now. Most farms used to include cattle, pigs, chickens, and other animals as well as crops (wheat, corn, soybeans, etc.). Having animals on the farm requires so much more of the farmer’s attention than just the farming. Milking cows requires even more attention than cattle raised for beef which can be found on ranches. Dairy cattle need milked every day. They don’t care about the weather or the holidays or vacations. What they care about is being milked and that doesn’t happen unless they have a calf or human hands to do the job.

#2 Post of 2012 highlights “Small Town” Caring!

When I started looking for this post, I could have swore Marcy’s fundraiser was this past fall. Silly me…the time goes way too fast! It was held in March. I was overwhelmed by the number of views this post received – but not really. Living in small town USA and being fortunate enough to experience neighborly caring has been something I will NEVER regret. You can keep the big city life and all that goes with it! As for me…my heart’s in the country and small town living. Read “When Community Comes Together” and you’ll understand where I’m coming from.  On a side note, Marcy is doing VERY well! Surgeries have revealed the cancer is gone and she’s going to continue living life to the fullest! PRAISE GOD! It’s New Year’s Eve. Our plans are to be home (babysitting my two favorite little girls) where it’s warm and safe. 🙂 For all of you who are heading out to bring in 2013 with a bang…BE CAREFUL! We’ve already seen what a “small” wreck can do to a person’s way of thinking. Have fun and here’s to 2013! New trials, new roads to travel, new fields to enter and new memories to create!

Countdown to the #1 read post in 2012

It’s been pretty busy around the Z household for the past week. I feel bad about pushing my writing to the side – but only just a little. I’ve been spending time with Christmas preparations, kids and activities of the season. One day soon, things will get back to normal and I can dedicate more time to my blog. For now, though, I’ve decided I will share with you the top four posts of 2012. The #1 posting will be shared with you on January 1, 2013 – a brand new year with brand new memories to capture.

Today, though, we are heading to Omaha for a movie, Lincoln, and supper out with the family. Can’t wait to see this movie (and spend the evening with my family – including my brother, Matt)!

The #4 most read blog of 2012 – “Right now…I HATE harvest!”

Merry Christmas from the Z Crew!!

IMG_9982

I’d like to wish each of you a Blessed Christmas! I hope you’re enjoying your day with family and friends. We’ll begin our day opening the presents that took so long to pick out. When that’s complete and the pile of gifts have been reduced to a pile of boxes and torn paper, I’ll make Christmas breakfast. The afternoon will be spent watching movies, playing games or just sleeping. Roast beef, mashed potatoes, corn, rolls and cookies – LOTS AND LOTS of cookies – for supper!  Thank you so much for stopping by and for being loyal Nebraska Wheatie friends!

Jamie – Our Firstborn/Our Guinea Pig/Our Leader of the Pack – turns 27

Twenty-seven years ago today, we brought home a tiny little baby – the beginnings of the Z Crew.  Jamie was just a little more than 24 hours old when we left the hospital in my little blue Subaru. It was sooo cold that evening, we couldn’t keep the car warm. I remember feeling like I was probably going to jail when I took that tiny little baby out of her car seat and held her close to me. I was hoping I would be able to keep her warmer than the car was providing.  Our little guinea pig was born at 1:01 p.m. on December 23, 1985.

The Annual Hunt for Perfection

img_2435If you guessed Cabela’s – you were correct!

Yesterday afternoon, we made our annual trek through the pasture looking for the perfect tree. The actual job of finding THE one is an adventure in itself! Once you find one that might work, you just automatically think maybe you’ll find one better just over the ridge.  The temperature was in the upper 50’s when we left home but the sun was going down. That’s what you get for trying to squeeze too many things in at the same time! But, as it worked out, we had plenty of time to find three trees that would fit the bill for what they were meant to be – a Christmas tree.

IMG_2434We used to park next to Les & Jeff Johnson in Jordan, Montana when they were custom harvesters. Great guys! Wish we could see them again…besides on TV. It’s fun to see their “stuff” and feel like you’d like to tell those around you, “I know these guys”!

PS…we had Mexican food for lunch.
