The day started out with dew. So much dew, it looked like it had rained. It was decided that we’d go out after lunch and try a sample just to see where we were at.

After eating Lacy and Harleigh Jo’s wonderful lunch, we headed to the field. The first test was 15.5%. So, we waited until 2:00 and tried it again. This time, it was 14.9%. We waited a little while longer and about 3ish or so, we took a load to town to see what it would test. I was the chosen driver. I had it all figured out in my head that if the guys at the elevator yelled at me about the grain being too wet (they can sometimes get pretty upset) I was going to blame it on the combine drivers. I am just the stupid truck driver 🙂 It tested 13.5%. GET THOSE COMBINES ROLLING!  The first field we cut averaged 35 bushels to the acre. The field we moved to and will be working on tomorrow is averaging 50/60 bushels. Jim said sometimes the grain monitor in the combine even showed 70 bushel wheat. Just a LITTLE different from the yields here a year ago! Test weight has been around 60/61 and protein close to 12%.

These first few pictures show my view from the ground looking up. When you’re chasing shade and the afternoon drags on and on, a nap is good – even if it’s on the ground and not real comfortable.

The first step in dumping the grain from the truck begins with this shack.  The grain is probed and tested for moisture, protein, foreign matter & test weight. From this stop, the truck drives on a scale to be weighed.

After the truck’s weighed, the next step is to the pit where the grain is dumped from the truck to the elevator storage.

Towards the end of the day, the line at the elevator got to be pretty long – about 1 1/2 hour wait.

It was a GOOD day!
